How We Teach Reading
Walk To Read
Nystrom uses a Walk to Read model, which is a differentiated reading instruction approach that allows schools to group students based on reading abilities rather than by class or grade. Here's how it works:
Students are regularly assessed to determine their appropriate reading group
Students are grouped with others at similar reading levels, regardless of their homeroom class
During a dedicated time block (the "Walk to Read" period), students physically move to different classrooms to work with teachers in these skill-based groups
Teachers focus on targeted instruction for their specific group's needs
Groups are flexible and change as students progress
The main benefits include:
Instruction tailored to each student's reading level
Efficient use of resources as teachers specialize in specific reading levels
Regular reassessment allows students to move between groups as they improve
This approach helps ensure all students receive appropriate reading instruction matched to their current abilities.
